About this artwork

In this drawing, a short-haired figure is depicted by his/her profile, accompanied by a vase and flowers that resemble calla lilies. The flowers, often related to femininity are put in contrast with short hair which is often regarded as a manly feature. The dark hair echoes the leaves and the dark vase. The gender of the figure is ambiguous, or is it important?

Israeli multi-media artist Michal Helfman revisits history and boundaries, such as frontiers, through sculpture, architecture, video and drawing. Oil pastel is a medium that Helfman labels as “rebellious” and is used to challenge the boundary between genders here.
