About this artwork

The human figure’s hair is tied into a bun and is holding some calla lilies. One cannot distinguish the figure’s gender. Many people see calla lily representing sexual orientations such as bisexuality and homosexuality because its structure and appearance evokes both male and female genitalia. Salvador Dali, Ansel Adams, and Robert Mapplethorpe have portrayed the calla lily in their art, often with an erotic understone.

Israeli multi-media artist Michal Helfman revisits history and boundaries, such as frontiers, through sculpture, architecture, video and drawing. Oil pastel is a medium that Helfman labels as “rebellious” and is used to challenge the boundary between genders here.
