About this artwork

This drawing depicts a figure with short curly hair holding a vase and a bouquet of calla lilies. The figure can be interpreted as a man or a woman. Calla lily is interpreted by some as a representation of sexual orientations such as bisexuality and homosexuality because its structure and appearance evokes both male and female genitalia. Salvador Dali, Ansel Adams, and Robert Mapplethorpe have portrayed the calla lily in their art, often with erotic understone.

Israeli multi-media artist Michal Helfman revisits history and boundaries, such as frontiers, through sculpture, architecture, video and drawing. Oil pastel is a medium that Helfman labels as “rebellious” and is used to challenge the boundary between genders here.
