About this artwork

The elegantly dressed figure seems to be in a thinking posture, accompanied by a bouquet of flowers and a vase. The pleats on the clothing match the folds on the bouquet. The figure’s short hair, which is often regarded as a manly feature, is in contrast with the flowers, which often carries feminine connotations. The gender of the figure is ambiguous, or unimportant here.

Oil pastel is a medium that Helfman labels as “rebellious” and is used to challenge the boundary between genders here. Israeli multi-media artist Michal Helfman revisits history and boundaries, such as frontiers, through sculpture, architecture, video and drawing.
