About this artwork
183 bullet shells were used on the fabrication of this artwork by the Cuban artist Reynier Leyva Novo. The brass from the bullets served to cast 10 weights from 1g to 1kg. The artist managed to give a physical representation to the metaphoric idea of the weight of the dead, embodying in these weights all the violence contained in an element as small as it is deadly.
Reynier established a relationship between the bullets used to cast these weights and the historical and physical load of the military conflicts and gun violence episodes from which they were issued, revisiting the questions of the value of life. Data mining and field research are common practices of the artist's work, who attempts to shed light on forgotten events of the past and to give physical form to abstract ideas and events that never took place in history.
