About this artwork
Wild Seeds is a film made by Yael Bartana in 2005 (to which this lightbox refers), in which a group of young men and women are circled by a camera while playing a game. This amusing activity is actually the reenactment of a real confrontation between the Israeli army and Jewish settlers, turned into a fun competition where one group has to remain arms linked while two players attempt to detach them. Behind the sounds of laughter and gleeful exclamation, there is a sport of exchanging power, finding resources in the other, and emotional negotiation. Reflecting a dire and complex situation, the teenagers, some of whom would soon be drafted in the army, breathe the fresh air of companionship. Bartana’s work addresses the historic scars that continue to haunt our collective memory while simultaneously talking about the events looming in the political landscape.
