About this artwork
On the Andromeda Rock, off the coast of Jaffa, a man carries out a symbolic exchange. He removes the Israeli flag that was planted there in favor of a young olive tree, before sitting down, meditative, at his side.
Carried by its peaceful symbolism, Israeli artist Yael Bartana's film plays with certain nationalist codes of his country. It reuses the heroic figure of the pioneer from the early days of Israel and formally references propaganda films of the 1930s (use of close-ups, slight slow motion). There is thus a symbolic “denationalization” of the territory through the very figure, and eminently nationalist, of the pioneer.
