A multitude of colorful flakes extracts itself from the canvas, seemingly solid and delicate at the same time. These curled up fragments are scraps of paint layers from different building facades in Havana. Diana Fonseca’s series Degradación is a collection of these scraps, reassembled as paintings , creating new narratives. These chips carry the history of the city, and the title of the series, degradation, points to the physical and sometimes symbolic deterioration of a place. The artist thus conserves the memory of the people as well as the city, as if they had shed themselves upon the canvas, which will itself experience decay in its own time.
