About this artwork
This work is part of The Polar Bears Series. The big white bear is an endangered species, and its presence here alongside statements from political or politically connoted figures – among them Barack Obama, Brian Eno, Desmond Tutu, Jane Goodall and Ansel Adams – comes as a manifesto reminding us of their ecological awareness and their commitment in the urgent struggle against global warming.
Stuart L. Udall (1920-2010) is a pioneer of the environmental movement. Udall warned of a conservation crisis in the 1960s with his best-selling book on environmental attitudes in the United States, The Quiet Crisis (1963). Stuart Udall once stated, "Plans to protect air and water, wilderness and wildlife are in fact, plans to protect Man."
