About this artwork
Mur i Wieza is a film made by Yael Bartana in 2005 (to which this lightbox refers), following the construction of a kibbutz (a collectivist community unique to Israel) in Warsaw. Faithfully following the traditional building methods and architecture of the 1930s, Yael Bartana references the Homa U’Migdal (wall and tower) method used during the Arab revolt between 1936-1939, during the British mandate in Palestine. In order to dodge the ban on territory annexation, Jewish settlers built the bare minimum needed for a settlement during the night, hence the name of the method recalling the two minimal structures assembled, and more residential buildings were built at a later time. Through this film, its lightbox, and parallel with the aesthetics of Russian constructivism, the Israeli artist evokes the complex utopian ideals that came with the construction of the state of Israel, a political fantasy that has escalated into deadly conflicts and international involvement.
