About this artwork
The Lemniscate series consists of various sculptures made from wooden banisters reclaimed from old houses and then repurposed and fitted together so that they form an infinite loop. A lemniscate is a mathematical term for the figure eight, or an infinity loop, consisting of two loops that meet at a central point. While the sculpture doesn’t necessarily follow strictly this form, the concept of the infinite loop remains the same. The banisters have been touched by multiple hands before they became a material for the artwork, and Nika Neelova calls it the choreography of the absent human body. The absence of the body in itself makes a powerful image, drawing upon both the presence and absence of existence, both infinitely tied together.
Nika Neelova focuses her artistic research on highlighting the relationship and the continuous exchange between the human body, the surrounding architectural space, and the geology of the earth through its complexity and morphology. She employs salvaged architecture to reveal unknown pasts and unite them with the present. Her sculptures and installations evoke associations with history, collective memory, and an imagined post-human future.
