It’s difficult for me to separate disciplines, to differentiate what technology is and what it’s not. My way of thinking comes from my sensibility as a botanical illustrator and from healing practices that have been invisibilized, kept, protected and that have started to be expressed through today’s tools like technology.

Biography

Chilean artist Patricia Domínguez creates otherworldly video works and sculptural environments that draw from an expansive inventory of visual symbols, ranging from plant life and healing rituals to cheap mass market goods, internet downloads, and corporate wellness schemes. Staged in natural and shrine-like settings, often illuminated by the fluorescent glow of LED lights, Domínguez time-based pieces reflect the artist’s research on the long mark of colonization in Chile and her own family history, as entangled across ecological, spiritual, and therapeutic realms.

She uses drawing as a tool to explore the anatomy of plants and animals, and while she acknowledges the heritage of western scientists, she attempts to decolonize the discipline by studying Mesoamerican manuscripts. The politics behind her work liken her practice to Francis Hallé stand on  vegetation and particularly on primary forests for he considers trees as living entities similar to communities having been subjected to genocides.

Her interest in alternative healing practices finds echoes with Emma Kunz’s work who used geometric abstraction as a means to display her spiritual ideals.
