About this artwork
Two blurry figures pose in the light of a bright apartment, one man sitting on a chair while a woman wearing a long blue striped dress leans in on him affectionately. As if glimpsing into a couple’s daily life, taking a moment away from the lunch table to look at us, Marius Bercea depicts a calm and warm scene. The title of the piece could refer to one of Anton Chekhov’s famous plays of the same name, which tells the story of an aristocratic Russian landowner who returns to her family estate (which includes a large and well-known cherry orchard), and her failure to save the property from ruin. The story presents themes of cultural futility – both the futile attempts of the aristocracy to maintain its status and of the bourgeoisie to find meaning in its new-found materialism.
