About this artwork

A lonely artist, sitting on a swivel stool, looks upon a blank canvas, a white shape in stark contrast to an otherwise highly patterned painting. In this longing stare we can fantasize of all the possibilities coursing through the painter’s mind. This river of creative potential can seem dissonant with the reality of the artistic profession, one that is often cruel and unrewarding. Material security is not guaranteed, and one’s economic future can be unsure. This self-reflection from Marius Bercea is even more relevant in these past couple of years, when the pandemic has had a tremendous impact on the profession and left many in precarious circumstances.
