About this artwork
Nine slabs of glass are stacked above each other, held up and separated by dome shaped plastic molds. The shelf is part of Patrick Jackson’s Shelving Units series, which often contain an assemblage of items put on display. In those cases, the objects are meant to feel weightless on the transparent surface, as if floating in the exhibition space. The shelf is therefore “nothingness”, it holds no presence, no psychological or meaningful connection to anything other than itself. Once the product of consumption disappears, the question of purpose and intent of the shelf comes into play, and Jackson’s intent is to turn it into a signifier and signified all at once.
