Biography

Having held and shown his installations in the intimacy of his Los Angeles apartment complex on more than one occasion, Patrick Jackson does not hesitate to bring people into his subconscious. Inspired by literature and theory, the American artist also brings meaningful pieces of his own life into his works. He can thus create familiar and uncanny spaces all at once, contrasting viewers’ psychologies in a given moment.

In series such as Patrick Jackson’s Shelving Units, we can find Clement Greenberg’s theory on kitsch, where purely materialistic and “bad taste” objects play into consumerism’s attempt at culture. Greenberg writes: “Kitsch is vicarious experience and faked sensations”. There is thus no real meaning, a feeling of “nothingness” that the artist reaches for in his work.

In the same way that Jackson’s oeuvre combines human experience with theory, Dostoyevski described that of the Russian culture and people of his time. Through his novels, namely Crime and Punishment, The Idiot, or Notes from Underground, he gives a critical picture of what it is to exist in such a time, the latter example becoming a precursor for existentialism.
