About this artwork

This flag depicts the portrait of Nikolai Chernyshevsky, whose revolutionary novel "Chto délat?" (What to do?), written in 1863, supplied the emotional dynamic that eventually went to make the Russian Revolution.
The series of "Learning Flags" operate under the principle of double ontology, as both art objects and elements in fact used at street protests, waving symbols of progressive thought. Using typical “revolutionary” avant-garde art forms to begin a discussion around aesthetics, Chto Delat practice is symptomatic of a new artistic dialectic that doesn’t produce works of art anymore, but rather material and intellectual experiments. [based on the text by Agata Pyzik]
