About this artwork

The Saint Petersburg-based collective Chto Delat explores “what art could be at a moment when familiar politics and everyday life start falling apart (…) audiences vanish, activist groups implode and actually getting anything done becomes impossible".

The series of Learning Flags operate under the principle of double ontology, as both art objects and elements in fact used at street protests, waving symbols of progressive thought. Using typical “revolutionary” avant-garde art forms to begin a discussion around aesthetics, Chto Delat practice is symptomatic of a new artistic dialectic that doesn’t produce works of art anymore, but rather material and intellectual experiments.
