About this artwork
In the foreground of this gouache work, a fox looks up at his surrounding environment. Far from a natural milieu, the animal, known to be found in a variety of habitats, from deserts to the Arctic, has found itself in a world of concrete. Behind him we can find a supermarket from the French commune of Ris-Orangis, designed in 1973 by architect Claude Parent, who initiated the rupture with modernism in the 1950s. A usual theme for Isa Melsheimer, animals coming back to places of nature past and adapting to a new setting gives her work a science fiction aura. The reconquest reminds us of the strict confinements we experienced in the early weeks of the pandemic in 2020, when animals roamed the streets of cities, rulers of the concrete jungle for a little while. The artist’s general fascination with architecture and its possibilities opens eyes to the exchange of energies between structures and people.
