About this artwork
A small blue window into a scene of people enjoying a sunny day in the sea, superimposed with a transparent school of fish, as if the humans were replicating or were even part of these organisms’ movements.
This work is part of a series of similar pieces commissioned by the Jeu de Paume in Paris for the exhibition “Basim Magdy: No Shooting Stars, satellite 9 programme,” curated by Heidi Ballet, in 2016. The series accompanies the eponymous film, which “is built around the personal narrative of an unidentified inhabitant of the ocean space, a territory that lays dormant on the margins of our awareness and does not enter history books.” Shot on 16mm film, the artist isolated individual frames, exhibiting them in a row, like snapshots of a fever dream.
