About this artwork
Part of Irene Kopelman’s The Levy’s Flight installation, this ceramic sculpture replicates a fragment of volcanic crust which would stick out from the usually flat volcanic formations of Hawai’i’s Volcanoes National Park. It was during a research visit in October 2008 that the Argentienean artist undertook a deep scientific expedition, researching the forms and elements present in this unique environment. There is a sense of immense natural force at hand, a force capable of simultaneous destruction and creation. The rippled and grooved reproduction embody the push and pull of natural energies, ultimately arriving at a state of equilibrium.
