About this artwork
Fast, large strokes of reds and blues cover the canvas, playing with the transparency of some and the thickness of others. Through the title of the painting and the semi-visible elements, we understand that the artist has expanded on Wittgenstein’s rabbit-duck illusion, a philosophy of perspective. The abstract composition and restrained use of two colors, built with various tools ranging from pallet knife to sanding paper, is part of a larger reflection on the idea of modesty on which Julia Dubsky has written about in her speculative essay ‘M/modesty’. Noting the indivisible notions of modesty and femininity, the Irish artist expanded the reflection into a series of paintings. She also creates a sort of wallpaper through these canvases, a material that one could either find themselves lost in, or find relief and escape in.
