The incongruity between modesty as something empowering in painting, and something largely disempowering to women, spawns a mixed perversion that such an eagerness should exist in painting for a manner that is opposite in qualities of agency.
Biography
Strongly inspired by artistic, literary, or philosophical figures from the Renaissance to contemporary times, Julia Dubsky infuses her paintings with a sharp sense for referencing. This surprisingly contrasts with her manner of creating her canvases, which stem from automated movements and seemingly arbitrary strokes. It is through the exploration of the medium itself and of colors that the artist finds her ultimate meaning, attesting to the possibility of multiple messages within one artwork.
This research into the medium and act of painting itself can remind us of action painting, with artists such as Elaine de Kooning or Joan Mitchell, who took a step back from the canvas and gave meaning to their bodily movements, a topic that has also gripped Julia Dubsky in some recent series.
Georgiana Houghton exhibited a similar approach to her work (as early as 1859), by letting an otherworldly entity guide her. Although Houghton’s inspiration is more spiritual than Dubsky’s intellectual one, they both work in the direction of meaning.
