Biography

Cristina Umaña Duran works with textiles, drawing and installation, collecting images, using fabrics to print, dye, sew and create installations. These materials describe situations, bodies and objects that surround her experience of time and space. She seeks to reflect on humor, mourning and the everyday: everyday objects, simplicities, daily smells, silhouettes, and invented names. Collections, which are essentially insignificant, are the best resource for memory. The creation of images and sculptural processes in the workshop have allowed her to transform the nature of the obvious into a reappropriation of everyday objects. Everything that seems insignificant becomes the best resource for memory.

The reflections on the ability to remember and lose one’s history are also found in Louise Bourgeois’ body of work, through which she deconstructs the experiences she went through in childhood. The therapeutic process is intertwined with feminist, body, and sexuality considerations.

The use of textiles in art is a historic one, often disregarded for being only decorative and feminine. Otti Berger was one of the Bauhaus members who experimented and theorized the design of fabrics, pushing against it being solely described as a feminine craft.
