About this artwork
A fallen tree raises two questions in the low mind:
Has it been knocked over by a natural force?
or a human action?
But the symbolic image it generates is the same:
Something valuable and which grows with effort surrenders to the fall.
Almost automatically we project ourselves to the moment before the fall and talk about the causes; the utensils used; the wind etc...something that is always somewhat scary; as if the randomness of the fall awaits us. In a time like this in which we suffer from so many diffuse fears, the fallen tree is a symbolic image that fits the threat sustained over time. That it is a tree in the shape of a claw does not stop it from being quixotic. Not in the heroic (and pathetic) sense that we usually use, but in the sense of somatizing our fears and longings in the landscape.
The windmills that were giants are a vision of Don Quixote and this painting allows itself a similar lyricism. Like a dream or a creepy vision.
