About this artwork

A series of differently formulated silences cover a small portion of music paper, indicating a strong instance of non-sound. ‘Silences (La Gran Colombia)’ takes up the metrics of the anthems of some extinct republics and proto-states. Here the musical notes are subtly cut out on an aseptic atmosphere recreating a network of nostalgic deviations and approaches, which revive the echoes of nation projects. The “Gran Colombia” was a state that encompassed much of northern South America and part of southern Central America from 1819 to 1831, including present-day Colombia, mainland Ecuador, Panama, and Venezuela, along with parts of northern Peru, northwestern Brazil, and Essequibo, Guyana.
