About this artwork

Re-locations is a project based around a small publication of personal photographs and memories of the Soviet soldier Vladislav Tamarov who fought in the Soviet-Afghan war in the mid-1980s. Later, he moved to the US and published a book with the help of the journalist Naomi Marcus. It is distinguished by its very subtle transitions from battles to the author's pre-war life and vice versa. This publication became a starting point for the project Re-Locations that traces the constant remediations of memory and trauma.

Mikhail Tolmachev explores the evolving status of the document and the political production of truth and reality. He is looking for aesthetic strategies to explore various constructions of reality and how they form temporality, space and agency. With installations, photo etchings, and spatial interventions he examines the intersections of realism and imagination, technology and territory. Mikhail collaborates with writers, historians, artists to explore the fractures of representation, attempting to manifest the use of structural violence.
