About this artwork
“(....) Rubber is the most prevalent [material in my work] because of its potency and association with slavery and oppression both in Africa and around the globe,” says Zacharaha Magasa about the significance of the medium. In this artwork, two rubber tires are slouched together. They are covered in black streaks and differently colored spray paint, giving a feeling of being used and having gone through a whirlwind of experiences in order to be bruised and battered in such a way. As if narrating a life, these elements mark a history.
Exhibited along other tire sculptures in the show Rain or Shine! at First Floor Gallery Harare in 2021, this piece is characteristic of Zacharaha Magasa’s oeuvre. It tells a vividly visual story due to its essence and through the forceful changes it’s been submitted to by the artist. Magasa’s strong commitment to issues of climate issues and socio-political contexts are all joined together in this piece.
