About this artwork

From Wolberg’s series Jewish State Landscapes (2008-2015) shows the daily life of the people living in the Palestine-Israeli territory. It exposes the oppression to which Palestinians are subjected but also presents pictures with vast parcels of land and Jewish rituals. The artist makes us consider the complexity of a brutal conflict that’s been unfolding in the region for more than seven decades and its banalization. Choosing to print his photos on black and white and in a panoramic format, the series heightens land’s importance while making homage to photojournalism.

As an immigrant from the Soviet Union, his work revolves around identity, the illusion of a unified identity and the dismantling fragmentation of identity. he uses the camera to expose the fluctuating moments which capture identity’s fictional, misleading and fantastical incarnations set against daily life. he seeks to capture the trickery nature of what we call identity in the eye of an immigrant –– and the way we live and experience living is always in between identities and borders. His work is about identity, memory and borders, exposing historical self and contemporary self, in order to see how identity from the past connects to the present and becomes memory.
