About this artwork

Translated from the Latin, the adjective “ignifer” means “carrying fire”. In Anna Vogel’s series of works of the same title there is a pecu-liar analogy between “carrying fire” and “fighting fire”. We see images of aerial firefighting without the planes. There are just the fire retar-dant chemicals in colors such as red, blue, and white inundating and spraying over deserted landscapes. Like in much of her work, Anna Vogel’s digital and manual intervention in found photographic foota-ge is meticulous, yet not totally obvious. In this series of prints, the manipulations is reduced to the erasure of the flight object.
Ignifer is about nature and catastrophe, the visual vocabulary of the Anthropocene as well as the similarity of prehistoric and post-apo-calyptic imageries. The philosophical theories on the Sublime, from Edmund Burke to Kant and German Romanticism, describe the con-frontation of man with something much bigger than him: mountains, the ocean, or a tempest. It is then that we feel overwhelmed by the enormity of nature, time, and the universe. And something similar is happening in the art of Anna Vogel.
