About this artwork
These rugs are basically a script or a sketch of the stories that Josep Maynou tells. He actually does it this way because he would love to have an archive of all the stories he tells in his performances and live shows. Each rug represents a story. And rugs are traditionally passed down through the generations, so it's a way to keep stories alive, fluid, and ever-changing. Stories and Rugs mix the elements and imagery of contemporary life with traditional formats of storytelling and rug weaving.
It is in the small mountain villages outside of Marrakech is where Maynou developed an interest in traditional crafts and made Boucherouite rugs, characteristic of the area. Eventually, with the help of the locals and their special weaving technique, he got into producing his own pieces with a unique pop culture twist. Traditional graphics were replaced by icons of well-known brands and graffiti scribbles, and this "new but old" type of wall decoration for the young generation became a cross-cultural link. It is also a wonderful story about involving an entire local community from a remote village in North Africa in creating pieces of art that the artist shows and shares both in the area and in other contexts. For Maynou, these pieces are actually a starting point and a continuity for the other part of his artistic practice: his ever-evolving stories and narrative performances.
