About this artwork
Giving us a glimpse into the privacy of a doctor’s appointment, Em Kettner invites us to perversely take a look at a physician examining their patient, the outlines of the disrobed body showing through a thin curtain. Staging a scene that all of us have experienced - standing, mostly naked, in a doctor’s examination room, ready to be poked and prodded - the artist presents it as a performance, a show that is wholly part of disability history. It can be uncomfortable, problematic at times, but is also part of the game of owning a body and dealing with its shortcomings. The two inch high square tiles, snuggled into wooden frames, are Em Kettner’s way of telling a story, each one being a miniature page of a journal with its recurring characters and narrative flow.
