About this artwork

Inspired by the protest of the Kolubara miners, an important event that marked the decline and fall of Milošević’s regime in Serbia, Igor Grubic collaborated with miners to create a project composed of a 17-minute video and photographic documentation. These “angels”, who have given up their heavenly wings to dirty their hands with coal, are presented as dignified and strong, comforted by the artist himself, wearing a heavy set of metal wings. At the time, the Kolubara mine was the largest supplier of lignite coal in Serbia, producing almost half of the country’s electricity, stressing the importance of such a revolt. As much as it has been painted as green energy, one mustn’t forget the inherent dirtiness of the production of electricity itself when produced from coal, oil or gas, a fact echoing today’s energetic and political crises.
