About this artwork
In 2012 Kurdish revolutionaries inspired by the Kurdistan Worker’s Party (PKK) took control over three regions in the northern part of Syria. Together, these regions are now known as “Rojava,” meaning “West,” referring to the Western part of Kurdistan. This takeover and the subsequent implementation of an alternative democratic system became known to the world as the “Rojava Revolution.” The Kurdish revolutionaries presented together with Arabs, Assyrians, Chaldeans, Arameans, Turkmen, Armenians and Chechens from the northern part of Syria their “Social Contract”. This happened in the midst of heavy fights against the Syrian regime of Assad on one hand and the militants of Jihadist organizations such as the Islamic State on the other. Through this Social Contract the peoples of Rojava declared “democratic confederalism,” or “stateless democracy”: a non-state model based on local self-governance, gender-equality and communal economy.
