I conceive my artistic practice as a powerful place of resistance and subversion of the modes of existence imposed by a dominant artificial world.

Biography

In a constant exchange of ideas between our world and others, Andrés Matías Pinilla attempts to build universality. Through the concepts of ethnicity, sexuality, race, religion and philosophy, he builds new language and forms of communication, breaking the hegemonic systems in contemporary art and beyond. Having psychic and mental health at the center of his work, Pinilla builds installations meant to bring people together in an effort of collective healing.

The Colombian artist’s holistic social agenda carries through Kimberlé Crenshaw’s intersectionality theory, which recognises that intersecting and overlapping social identities may be both empowering and oppressing. As societies that operate as interactions between beings, we should therefore be aware of one’s social identities and how it can affect them in different ways than ours.

In a more satirical methodology, Jonathan Swift’s essay “A Modest Proposal” of 1729 also subverts language in a way that makes obvious the absurd state of the Irish poverty, coldly suggesting that the poor could resort to selling their children as food in order to survive. An attack towards the British attitude towards the Irish, Swift’s bitter words resonate and give a gloom vision into what could be.
