I (...) try to find new meanings to the idea of tradition in a highly connected reality. I think we live a time of deep restructuring.

Biography

As time passes throughout our lifetime, the slow but consequent evolution of all things surrounding us can elude us. This is what Achraf Touloub attempts to materialize in his drawings, sculptures, and videos. Giving the stage to both the past and the present, the artist confronts modes of communication and reality building. He asks the eternal question: how do we know where reality lies? If the passage of time mutates all things, is there still a truth found somewhere? Bridging tradition and modernity, Touloub offers a language of representation to express these tensions.

This is not the first time artists had to deal with the great upheaval of what it means to create pictorial works, as we can notably remember the impact photography had on artists of the late 20th century thanks to its inventor Nicéphore Niépce. Now that technology had taken the role of image depiction, art evolved into what the camera cannot express: feelings and concepts.

The reality-virtuality continuum, concept introduced by professor of mechanical and industrial engineering Paul Milgram in 1994, is one that Achraf Touloub delves into through his oeuvre. There is a spectrum, with absolute reality and absolute virtuality on its two ends, which changes the manners in which we evolve and interact with our surroundings.
