Summary

The Uluguru Mountain Forest in Tanzania is known for its unique biodiversity and is a top priority for conservation in Africa. APOPO in partnership with Sustainable Agriculture Tanzania (SAT), is training farmers in agro-ecological practices, protecting the environment and safeguarding the futures of the communities that live there. Planting trees alongside farmers’ crops and teaching smart organic agriculture skills that produce natural fertilisers lead to higher crop yields, increased income, improved water and soil quality and therefore food security and environmental safeguarding, as the trees will sequester CO2, reducing climate change on a global level.

Local farming communities face many challenges such as lack of knowledge on production, lack of capital, inappropriate farm management, and harsh weather conditions. HeroTREEs promotes sustainable agriculture, reducing strain on forests and preventing climate change. Planting 35 species of indigenous trees maintains biodiversity, improves soil fertility, and provides fuel, timber, fodder, fruit and spices, medicine, windbreaks, and the ability to start beehives and grow cash crops.

APOPO offers fast, effective and cost-efficient alternatives to save lives, involving and employing local communities in the solution, whilst helping to create positive social change.
