Living seeds farm in South of France: a project to valorize farmer seeds as a factor of resilience to climate change
Organization information
SOL (Alternatives Agroécologiques et Solidaires)
Location: Paris, France
Summary
The Maritime Alps Region, in the South-East of France, suffers from important genetical erosion and loss of agronomical expertise. At the same time, the region is particularly affected by climate change consequences (heat, dryness, etc.). With their resilience to climate change and adaptation to the local context, farmer seeds are the most adapted to face the challenges linked to climate change in the framework of the agroecological transition.
In this context, SOL works with is local partner, Maison des Semences Paysannes Maralpines, to put farmer seeds back at the center of resilient, healthy, and sustainable local agricultural and food system for all.
To this end, this project mobilize all actors “from the crop to the plate” (farmers, gardeners, chefs, citizen-consumers and researchers) to collect and catalogue at least 100 local varieties resilient to climate change and diffuse them to farmers. The aim is to progressively guide farmers and consumers towards an agroecological transition based on farmer seeds reappropriation.
