Summary
Iraq is a country distressed by severe social and economic problems, where violence against women represents a worrisome phenomenon. Mental stress and anxiety are some of the key causes of the reported increase in GBV. Despite the Kurdistan Region being one of the few areas in the MENA region with a law that
criminalizes domestic violence, its operationalization remains doubtful. Society stigmatizes victims with a strong tendency to criminalize them, instead of the perpetrators which influence their ability to recover from or exit a situation of oppression.
INTERSOS provides protection services to women survivors of Gender-Based Violence, focusing on two main aspects that boost the quality and self-sufficiency of public women's shelters: legal assistance, that will ensure cases receive adequate representation, and case management, including specialized psychological support. INTERSOS is also raising awareness on the issue while mobilizing local communities surrounding the shelters to boost common knowledge around GBV topics.
