Intersos : Life-saving and wellbeing health assistance in Iraq
Organization information
Intersos – Organizzazione Umanitaria Onlus
Location: Milan, Italy
Summary
Four years after the end of official military operations against the Islamic State in Iraq and theLevant (ISIS), the humanitarian context in Iraq remains fragile. Healthcare services, already compromised from years of conflict, were put under further pressure from the COVID-19 pandemic.
INTERSOS intervention in Iraq is focused on providing life-saving health assistance. In particular, we offer support to save lives and reduce disease rates among the displaced and returnees’ populations by providing primary health care, reproductive health services, mental health and psychosocial support. Dedicated activities aimed at young children are carried out such as vaccination and nutrition services as well as newborn care for extremely vulnerable communities.
Our approach integrates protection and health services with the aim of providing the most comprehensive assistance to conflict affected populations. Finally, INTERSOS supported the process of integrating refugee children into the Iraqi education system in refugee and internally displaced camps, in order to facilitate the enrollment of students in formal education.
