FXB IN UGANDA : THE WASH PROJECT (Water, Sanitation, Hygien)
Organization information
FXB International
Location: Geneva, Switzerland
Summary
In Uganda, more and more people have found themselves living in an urban-like environment without even moving. Urbanization, with its attendant pollution challenges, sanitation, stormwater drainage, and solid waste management, is a growing problem, especially in central Uganda. Basic needs like clean water have become a rare resource that needs to be paid for or finds alternatives that are more likely contaminated.
In Uganda, over 8 million people out of 40 million people are drinking from natural streams, unprotected wells and ponds, also shared with animals in most areas. In addition, around 30 per cent of the population takes more than 30 minutes to get safe water.
The project goal is to reduce morbidity and mortality caused by water-related diseases among children, women, and men in Wakiso District. This district is in the Central Region of Uganda near the capital city. Therefore, it is most affected by the effects of urbanization.
Over the last 2 years, FXB Uganda provided close to 2,400 households with water purifiers in the project location. In this new project phase, those 2,400 households will benefit gradually from improved water sources, lowering their need for water purifiers. Nonetheless, water purifiers will be continuously provided to households as long as they are not able to access newly constructed/rehabilitated wells planned in this new project phase. FXB Uganda and its WASH project imagine a community where all people have access to safe water within a reasonable distance and that they can afford it. FXB assumes that if:
- communities have water points amidst them (within a rational distance and affordable),
- water points are monitored and managed by community members,
- and the general public is empowered and educated on sustainable
Then they will become aware of how healthy hygienic behaviour improves their health, life and environment. As a result, they will be more willing to invest in their water points maintenance.
