Summary
Burundi is a country in Africa where nearly three-quarters of the population lives below the poverty line, and 51% of children under five years of age suffer from chronic malnutrition.
Our Economic and Community Development FXBVillage model is a holistic approach to poverty reduction. It aims to simultaneously address 5 underlying factors: economic poverty, malnutrition, lack of access to health care, lack of access to education and information, and unsanitary housing and environments. It is also about fighting against all forms of discrimination, particularly gender discrimination or gender-based violence, to balance relations between men and women so that the latter, who are more exposed to poverty, can access the same economic and social opportunities. Eleven FXBVillage programs have already been developed in the municipalities of Bujumbura Mairie and Rural, enabling nearly 8,500 adults and children to escape extreme poverty by acquiring the skills needed to survive.
The proposed program intends to identify and select another 100 beneficiary families living in extreme poverty, especially in the Kiyenzi zone, to strengthen FXB's impact in the province. Vulnerable households in Kiyenzi experience challenges such as poor access to land, low level of sanitation, high prevalence of malnutrition, and low coverage of health care services.
With a planned duration of 3 years, the global objective of the FXBVillage Kiyenzi program is to strengthen the resilience of 100 extremely poor families so they can escape multidimensional poverty. FXB will strengthen beneficiaries’ capacities and sustainably improve their living conditions by working simultaneously on five program components: nutrition, health, WASH, education and economic empowerment.
