Summary
Our goal at Aiutare Senza Confini ODV (Help without Frontiers) is to offer refugee children access to education in the Tak Province of Thailand along the Thai-Myanmar border.
In total we run 6 Migrant learning Centres (MLCs) and partially support additional 5 MLCs with a total of approximately 1500 students.
MLCs not only provide a learning opportunity for migrant children, but also include those children in a wider system of protection and support. By enrolling in school, the children are less at risk of child abuse, drug abuse, and child labour, which are some of the main risks faced by out-of-school children. Through their MLC, enrolled students also have connections to a child protection network and other support systems, including reporting mechanisms and emergency support. MLCs act as a vital safety net for migrant children – as many barriers remain in the enrolment of migrant children into Thai schools, the MLCs help to ensure that the number of migrant children slipping through the cracks and disappearing stays as low as possible.
Furthermore, we give refugee youth a chance for a better future. Through our youth leadership program and our vocational training, youth learn to become independent and self-confident in order to escape the vicious circle of poverty.
