About this artwork

Lines of metallic foil cover the canvas, the material glistening into an optical illusion of depth and perspective. Heman Chong’s series “Things That Remain Unwritten” is an extension of his earlier one named “Covers”, in which the works are book covers of novels that the artist has yet to read, but intends to. Throughout the series, he has used the same sized canvases and acrylic paints, bought from the same art supply store. On abstract and sharp geometric lined backgrounds, the titles and author names stand out with their fine white lettering. “Things That Remain Unwritten” is thus a secondary step, where the aforementioned titles and names disappear, leaving room for the interpretation of the series name: are we reading between the lines?
