Multiple words, shapes, and colors are layered on this work on paper, competing for the attention of the viewer. Most noticeable is the word “Plastik”, and statements spelling “pictures are enough as an answer” and “the body builds the picture” in German. These “guidelines” accompany Franz Erhard Walther’s participatory oeuvre, which strongly insists on the activation of it through the actions and bodies of its observers. Often inviting the viewer to touch and engage with artworks to activate them, Walther has stated the following: “Although gestures and bodily movements do not relate to anything beyond themselves, they are still tied to the specific course of action that is intended by the piece: remaining in a designated place, with or without direction; movement within the spatial field, with or without direction; time-related, space-related, body-related.”
