About this artwork
'Lilies of the Field' is a series of luminous prints based on a flower album the artist discovered in the American Colony archive in Jerusalem. The American Colony, founded in 1881, documented Western Asia through photography and pressed flower albums, which were sold as souvenirs to tourists in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. These albums reflect a romanticized, orientalist view of Jerusalem, mapping it as a mythical place tied to biblical narratives. Guez photographed and reconstructed the
dried flowers and their residual pigments, creating radiant cyanotype-like prints that reveal the gaps between historical accuracy and fabricated representations. The series highlights the passage of time and how the history of a place intertwines with the objects that represent it.
