About this artwork
Larissa Fassler continues her urban, social and political mapping of Parisian public spaces, which she began in 2009 with the Place de la Concorde, then developed around several train stations (Saint-Lazare and the Europe district, Les Halles and the Gare du Nord).
While walking around Paris during a residency at the Musée d’Orsay last September, Fassler was drawn to the circular shape of the Bourse du Commerce and its impact on the orbital flows that the public draws around this “ocular” shape at the western entrance to the Forum des Halles. Her new series is composed of ten works, each illustrating a different time and temperature of day, in the way that Monet depicted Rouen Cathedral.
Without starting from a pre-existing architectural plan, the artist mapped this urban space by counting her own steps to mark it with landmarks that are on the scale of her moving body. She then traced the paths taken by pedestrians in blue or red pen. The crosses mark passers-by at a standstill, while the shadows, rendered in shades of blue, beige and warm yellow, evoke the burning heat and dazzling light of these days. The themes of the eye, the sun, the orbit and the eclipse are at the heart of this work, exacerbated by the wallpaper on which the drawings are hung, reproducing an interior view of the glass roof of the Bourse du Commerce.
