[Contemporary art] produces new desires, puts emotions and bodies to work, eroticizes our relationship with the inanimate and inorganic, invents fields of sensuality and experience...
Biography
Eva Fàbregas’ practice explores the erotica of the consumer object and the engineering mechanisms of desire, through sculpture, video, installation and sound. Her interest in affections has led her to produce works that address wellness and relaxation culture, psychodrama and the marketing industry, as well as therapeutic subcultures on social media. Her strong interest in sexuality, especially women’s, shows a commitment to exploring the subject which has far too long been under-studied.
In a similar vein, sculptor Niki de Saint Phalle’s concern for race, gender, reproductive rights, food security, climate change, and other cultural issues of the time translated in her Nanas series. Through voluptuous and colorful figures of women in joyous and dancing poses, she championed diversity and inclusiveness of bodies as sensual entities.
The liberation of feminine perspectives of sexuality is a rather recent one, but we can find exceptions such as Kate Chopin’s The Awakening, which in 1899 depicted the sexual desires of women, separate from a reproductive goal. Now a feminist symbol, the book paved a way for liberation and conversation adopted by artists like Eva Fàbregas.
